Lezing: Co-regulation as the Foundation for Healthy Development
What can you do as a parent when your child is struggling or simply not feeling like themselves?
Does this sound familiar?
- Your child is bright, yet seems to be struggling at school, doesn’t seem happy, or you notice that their development has stalled.
- Your child reacts much more intensely than you would expect.
- They withdraw, become easily overwhelmed, or explode emotionally.
- You’ve tried all kinds of things, but it feels as if you’re both stuck in the same patterns.
- And perhaps you notice that parenting sometimes takes more energy than you’d like.
What if your child’s behaviour isn’t only about what’s happening today, but is also connected to earlier experiences that haven’t yet been fully processed?
During this inspiring evening, Irene van der Schaar, a mother herself and a specialist in healthy child development and the factors that can interfere with it, will introduce you to a different way of understanding emotions, behaviour and what lies beneath them.
Through many years of supporting people in overcoming obstacles and achieving peak performance-from musicians to elite athletes-Irene repeatedly discovered how profoundly a person’s environment influences their development. In this talk, she focuses on the unique role of parents.
As Irene beautifully puts it: “If a child is a fish, the parents are the water.”
The safety, connection and emotional attunement parents provide form the foundation on which healthy development can flourish.
What will this evening offer?
You’ll be introduced to the concept of co-regulation and discover the important role parents play in creating safety, connection and emotional stability, allowing children to continue developing.
Irene explains, in an accessible way, how approaches such as Brainspotting and ISTDP (Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy) can support this process—and, most importantly, what you as a parent can take away and apply in everyday life.
This is not an evening full of complicated theory.
Instead, you can expect an evening filled with recognition, fresh insights and practical tools that you can start using straight away.
Curious?
Come along, ask your questions and discover how strengthening your own foundation can help your child continue to grow.

🌿 A valuable follow-up
If this topic resonates with you, our parent evening “Parenting Through Stress and Tension at Home” on Monday, 2 November, presented by Marleen Kouwenhoven and Charie van Engelenburg (KOPPKOV/Jellinek), is a wonderful follow-up.
Both evenings explore the influence – positive or negative – that we as parents can have on our children, and how we can strengthen resilience in ourselves and within our families.
While Irene will take you through the importance of co-regulation, safety and connection, the second evening focuses more specifically on stress and tension within the family.
The two evenings complement each other beautifully, but can also be attended independently.
🌱 More than just this “lezing”
Would you like to explore the topic of parenting more deeply, talk something through or simply share your experiences?
Perhaps this workshop raises new questions, inspires you to learn more, or maybe something is happening at home that you’d like to talk about with someone.
At Leidsche Rijn Ouders-Connected, there’s always room for that.
You’re warmly welcome for a one-to-one conversation—whether you’d like to share your story, discuss concerns about parenting or your child, or simply think things through together.
Just as important to us is the connection between parents.
That’s why we intentionally create time before and after each workshop for parents to meet, exchange experiences and recognise themselves in one another’s stories.
Sometimes, simply realising “We’re not the only family going through this” can already make a world of difference.
We’re happy to think along with you. And if you’d like, we can also help connect you with other parents or with informal support networks in Utrecht, such as the Utrecht Informal Care Network (NIZU).
💡 Would you like to contribute?
Have our workshops or activities inspired you?
Do you have an idea, experience, skill or simply some enthusiasm you’d like to share?
We’d love to hear from you.
Whether you’d like to help with an activity, share your own experiences, or develop a new idea together with us—every contribution, big or small, is valuable.
You’re warmly invited to become part of our growing community.
📧 Feel free to send us a message—we’re always happy to listen, think along with you, and explore ideas together.
